How to train your cat to use a new litter box

When adding a new litter box to your home, adjusting to it for your cat can be just as important as choosing the right product. A gradual and patient approach can make the transition easier for you and your cat.

Step 1: Choose the right location

The location of the litter box is crucial. Your cat needs a quiet, safe place that is easily accessible. Avoid noisy and busy areas as cats prefer privacy during their toilet time. Make sure the location is easily accessible for you too to make cleaning easier.

Step 2: Choose a large litter box

A common reason cats don't use their litter box is because it's too small for them. This is especially important if your cat is still growing. A litter box that's just big enough now may not be big enough in a few months. Your cat will feel like they have more space and will happily poop in the litter box!

Step 3: Make the toilet inviting

Choose a litter that your cat prefers. If you're trying a new brand or type, it may be helpful to mix the litter types first. Make sure the litter is clean and odor-free, as cats are very sensitive to smells.

Step 4: Slow introduction

Start by placing the new litter box next to the old one without putting pressure on your cat to use it right away. Let your cat explore and get used to the new litter box in his own time.

Step 5: Use positive reinforcement

Reward your cat when he uses the new toilet. Use treats, toys or petting to create positive associations. Avoid punishments as these can only slow down the process and cause stress.

Step 6: Clean the old toilet less

Gradually make the old litter box less attractive by cleaning it less often. This may encourage your cat to try the new litter box, as cleanliness is an important factor for cats.

Step 7: Patience is key

Each cat is unique and needs their own time to adjust. Be patient and understanding. The process can take a few days to several weeks, depending on your cat's personality.
