Safe on the bike in autumn and winter

For many, cycling is a seasonal pleasure: spring and summer are considered the classic two-wheeler season. But even in autumn and winter you can travel safely by bike or pedelec - if you follow a few important tips, according to the DEKRA and ADO experts.

TIPS FOR CORRECT DRIVING BEHAVIOR

A defensive driving style is recommended on two wheels all year round, but even more so in autumn and winter: "Always drive carefully into curves - even if you suspect that it could be slippery - avoid steep inclines and, if possible, hard braking,” advises DEKRA and ADO Expert. "Otherwise, very critical situations can suddenly arise when it is wet, leaves, grit or even icy spots."

The recommendation to wear a helmet also applies all year round, but especially in autumn and winter when the risk of falling tends to be higher.
If there is snow or extreme weather conditions are forecast, you should consider switching to public transport. Hard-nosed people who still get on their bikes are on mountain bikes with wide tires.

ESPECIALLY CHECK RIM BRAKES REGULARLY

The wear and tear of rim brakes in particular can increase significantly when driving in the rain, says the DEKRA expert: "Water absorbs the dirt from the road, which is then distributed in the spray water onto the brake flanks - and causes increased wear when braking, like a kind of sandpaper. That's why it's important to keep a close eye on the condition of rim brakes.” Disc brakes are not as prone to this type of increased wear.

REDUCED RANGE OF E-BIKE BATTERY IN WINTER

If you are traveling with a pedelec, you should consider the influence of cold on the performance of the battery, especially over long distances. Because: Cold temperatures reduce the available capacity and thus the range.

“Cold does not permanently damage the battery. But to minimize the problem with the reduced range, store and charge your battery, ideally at room temperature, indoors and only take it outside when you start driving,” recommends the ADO expert.

Anyone who is currently thinking about buying a new pedelec and would like to ride it in autumn and winter should also consider an e-bike model with fat tires: “Pedelecs with wider tires have clear advantages when braking in the wet. Our comparative tests have shown that."
