Efficient e-biking: five tips for maximum range
Riding style, route profile, terrain, and even temperature – all of these factors influence battery range. However, if you ride economically and pay attention to a few things, you should be able to achieve ranges of 70 to 100 km with a 500 watt-hour battery and medium assistance – enough for most tours and day trips.
TIP 1: LOW ROLLING RESISTANCE THANKS TO OPTIMAL TIRE PRESSURE
Make sure your tires have the correct air pressure. This will reduce rolling resistance and increase energy efficiency.
TIP 2: SAVE ENERGY WHILE DRIVING
Especially on flat terrain and on flat sections, full assistance is often not needed. Here, you can ride quickly at a lower level – and save a lot of energy at the same time.
TIP 3: SHIFT SMARTLY
The correct cadence also increases the efficiency of the motor. The optimal range is between 75 and 90 revolutions per minute. Clever gear shifting allows you to adjust the cadence and conserve battery life.
TIP 4: DRIVE WITH ANTICIPATION
Starting off, in particular, consumes a lot of energy and reduces the range. Therefore, stop-and-go driving should be avoided whenever possible. When starting off, the gear and assistance level should be as low as possible. This avoids unnecessary strain on the battery.
TIP 5: JUST CHARGE
Most batteries can be recharged to about 50 percent in two hours. It's therefore worth having a charger handy on long trips or at the office. This way, you can "refuel" your energy during your lunch break, and more. Intermediate or partial charging doesn't harm modern lithium-ion batteries.
